Michael Parry our Ikaroa Chairman is one of the contenders for President Elect.

Michael Parry: Who am I? For those of you I haven’t met, I am currently the Technical Services Librarian for Tararua District Libraries. I also have the privilege of being the chair of the Ikaroa committee. My experiences in libraries have encompassed public libraries and academic, front desk and back room. I am passionate about libraries as centres of communities and about social media being a revolutionary tool to connect those communities.
I wish to contribute to the excellent work the council is doing in bringing council business to the members, and making LIANZA membership desirable.

IKAROA COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Congratulations to Heather Lamond who has just be re-elected as our Ikaroa Councillor. Heather has done a tremendous job over the last twelve months especially in the continuing professional development area.

We have been fortunate enough to have Heather help us with in areas of Professional Registration, as well as keeping us informated on changes at LIANZA etc.

Heather at LIANZA Conference was rewarded with LIANZA Associateship. Heather is customer driven, an effiective communicator, able to demonstrate strong leadership She is strongly committed to LIANZA being active on both the local committee and on National Council This is was well deserved award, and we are greatly honoured to have you as our Ikaroa Councillor for a second term.

NEW LIANZA Website

was very happy to see LIANZA Launch the new website. The old site had been clunky and not very “now”. Like many other librarians who are interested in the Internet and its applications while also being involved in the professional body I have been a little bit frustrated with our Internet presence. So this is a great step forward. Well done LIANZA! Much better to navigate and more user friendly fro SIGS.

Closing the Book on Libraries

The current climate in local government, and the fate of libraries

In Kaitaia and Kaikohe, residents must pay $15 in a “membership fee” to be able to use their public library. In Matamata, borrowers have to pay $1 a week to rent ordinary non-bestseller books. In Dannevirke and Pahiatua, library users over 18 have to pay $10 a year as a ‘borrowing card fee’ to rent books. In the Wairarapa, Tasman, Buller Westland/Hokitika. Selwyn and Gore regions, various charges apply for ordinary stock on the shelves. In Tauranga, the local council is reportedly aiming to recoup up to $430,000 via library charges over the next three years, by introducing a user-pays regime for free adult fiction and non-fiction – initially at the rate of 50 cents a book, rising to 80 cents and then one dollar in a year’s time. It also proposes to cut seven equivalent full time library staff positions and reduce library stocks by 30,000 items.
This crackdown on libraries is becoming a familiar theme, around the country. Membership fees, rental charges, access fees, overdue fines and other cost barriers are going up. Simultaneously, the funds for new stock, for library staff numbers and opening hours, and for digital access are being squeezed – except on items or services where there is a robust regime of cost recovery. What the plight of libraries signals is the erosion of free access to even the basic forms of knowledge that they hold. Ironically, libraries are coming under siege in the wake of the economic recession – just as citizens are using them more and more for knowledge access, for entertainment and as a community meeting ground.

LIANZA Council Elections

2010 LIANZA Council Elections
LIANZA Secretary, Alli Smith, is calling for nominations for the LIANZA Council for the 2010/11 year.
Nominations are being sought for the roles of President Elect, Ikaroa Councillor, Otago/Southland Councillor and Waikato/Bay of Plenty Councillor.
All nominations for the 2010/11 Council elections will close at 5pm on Thursday 20th May 2010.
Who can Nominate and Stand?
Any Personal Member of the Association or the Authorised representative of an Institutional Member may nominate any other Personal Member for election to a position as Officer on the National Council.
Any Personal Member of the Association or the Authorised representative of an Institutional Member in a particular Region may nominate any other Personal Member in that Region as Councillor for that Region on the National Council.
Who can vote?
The Officers of the LIANZA National Council are elected by Personal and Institutional Members of the Association.
Regional Councillors of the LIANZA National Council are elected by LIANZA Personal and Institutional Members within that Region.
Voting Papers
If an election for any position is held, voting papers will be sent to members for a poll.

Kia ora colleaguesI thought it useful if I updated everyone on the recent Government announcement that Archives New Zealand and the National Library of New Zealand would amalgamate into the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). Firstly, I want to thank the many individuals and sector groups that have been in touch during the past few weeks. Of course many questions and at times concerns have been raised and I want to assure you that your questions will be answered in the next few weeks. We will put these up on a web link very soon.
Since the announcement I have met with the Libraries of New Zealand through the Strategic Advisory Forum (made up of CONZUL, Te Rōpū Whakahau, ITPNZ, Parliamentary Library, NZLLA, LIANZA, SLANZA, GIG, the professional education sector, APLM and HealthSIG);the Library and Information Advisory Commission (LIAC), Guardians Kaitiaki of the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the Public Service Association (PSA). Revalidation Process cont.

Six Months out from when you revalidation is due (This information should be received by the office within 3 months of revalidation being due):
1. Write a brief self-assessment of your continuing professional development over the revalidation period, including any explanation for why any criteria might not have been met;
2. Print out Jorunal Cover Sheet and fill in. http://www.lianza.org.nz/resources/professional-registration/revalidation/journal-cover-sheet
3. Print out the Letter of verification, fill it in. http://www.lianza.org.nz/resources/professional-registration/revalidation/letter-verification
4. Get you manager to verify and sign that the revalidation journal is a true and correct record of you continuing professional development.
5. Forward your journal, together with:
the brief self-assessment of their continuing professional development over the period, including any explanation for why the criteria above might not have been met;
6. A signed statement that information recorded in the journal is true and correct, and
7. A signed statement (leter of verification) from the applicant’s employer (or another registered professional familiar with the applicant’s work and practice) verifying that the information recorded in the journal is to the best of their knowledge true and correct.

Put this all in a large envelope and post to:

The applicant should post the journal, cover sheet and signed letter of verification to the Administration Officer, Library and Information Professional Revalidation Board, c/- LIANZA, P.O. Box 12 212, Wellington.

At the same time, applicants who have maintained an electronic copy of the journal should submit this to the registration@lianza.org.nz

Putting The Journal Together

Over the 3 years period you will no doubt have attended a number or courses, seminars, webinars, conferences or read Online Journals , or other printed Library Journals etc.
Now you have collated all these in to you journal from your "Activities sheet" and "Seminar and Conference" sheets you need to check the following criteria:

1. Check that you have the BOK numbers recorded
2. Check that you recorded the date and activity correctly.
3. Check that you have coverage of all 11 areas of the Body of Knowledge , over the 3 year period, and
4. Check you have coverage of 3 out of the 4 domains of professional practice
i. Currency of Professional Knowledge
ii. Professional Practice and Responsibility
iii. Communication and Professional relationships
iv. Professional, Leadership

5. check you have at least 10 activities per year for the duration of the revalidation period (i.e. 30 over 3 years) and
6. You have commented on the learning outcomes of each activity undertaken and how you have applied this learning.

NOTE: As part of their assessment, the Board will be looking for
quality rather than quantity, relevance of activities to the role held by that individual, spread of learning across all areas and throughout the whole period evidence of the depth of learning gained.

You are almost ready for revalidation.

Social Cataloguing - Tim Spalding

Tim Spalding, the founder of LibraryThing, presented at LIANZA this past October, 2009 in New Zealand. He has posted his presentation on YouTube in a series of 6, 9 minute videos. The theme of his presentation? “What is social cataloging?” It’s great!

Cataloguing for Non Cataloguers

There 28 Librarians from Hawke's Bay Libraries and 2 Library Studies Studies syudents in attendance. Rosalie had a lively bunch who from the start offered eager words of participation. The course itself "Cataloguing for non Cataloguers" presentation gave a basic orientation to cataloging -- its purpose, its goals, its terminology and why we catalogue, and how to apply cataloguing principles to searching the Library catalogues.
A few participatory quizzes on the dewey system, what the 100's are and then how they relate to subjects. This was followed by a quick test to make sure they understood. They then looked at Subject Headings and had to work out what dewey 100's they fitted into, and then breaking down to the dewey thousands.
The Afternoon was used to apply what they had learnt to search catalogues around the country, to find books and information examples and questions.
An enjoyable day by all, the Lunches and afternoon tea being great and were really enjoyed. Some good networking opportunities too. Jocelyn said "it was great to see how Dewey and subject headings work hand in hand"

Rosalie Blake Dinner with East-in SIG

The recent retirement of long-serving Horowhenua District Librarian Rosalie has served at the helm of Horowhenua District for nearly three decades. Rosalie Blake is hosting a some professional development in the bay for Librarians of the East-in SIG.

Tonight several of the East-in SIG members enjoyed a lovely Thai dinner at the Lotus Thai restaurant in Taradale. A great evening of fun frivolity and networking was enjoyed by all.

Conference and Seminar Activities Record

For any conference you attend eg LIANZA, NDF, Children's Conference Archives Conference, Public Libraries Confernce etc

1. Record the sessions / networking opportunities too eg at Lunch, exhibitors etc. you went too. in the Conference and Seminars Activities Record.
2. Fill in the session / networking event title
3. Fill in the description of the session / event / networking.
4. Fill in box the knowledge gained, and how applied
5. Fill in the BOK number, domain & date

Repeat for each session you attended.

Revalidation Activities sheet

Write the activity that you completed with the date and the BOK number if you have time to check the catergory und the appropriate column whether it is:
1. Currency e.g. Read the new Copyright Act - BOK 1, Dec 08
2. Practice e.g. Web 2.0 skills training completed - BOK 7- Feb 08
3. Communication e.g. Attended presentation on readers advisory skills - BOK 4- May 08
4. Leadership e.g project manager for the recent Book Expo - BOK 9 12 Jul -30 Oct 09

So try and do this for each activity soon after the completion of the activity.

I actually start with an activities template, to record my training, professional development, reading, and othere relevant activities including the BOK number if I have time. A template obtained from http://www.lianza.org.nz/registration/files/revalidation_activities.xls

2. Download the Conference & Seminar Template
I also maintain a conference and seminar record sheet for various conferences and seminars I may attend over the three year period. http://www.lianza.org.nz/registration/files/conference_seminar_attendance_template.doc

3 Download Journal Template
I then once a month tranfer the information from my activities record to my journal with the appropriate comments, Bok number and how I have applied the new gained knowledge.
I Repeat the process for the Conference & Seminar activities sheet.

The journal can be downloaded to your own computer files and maintained on-line as an excel file. There is a separate worksheet for each of the 11 Body of Knowledge elements.

Alternatively the journal can be printed from the LIANZA website and maintained in hardcopy format.

Revalidation Criteria Part 1

Revalidation Criteria
Applicants wishing to maintain their registration must record evidence of continuing professional development and practice, demonstrated by examples.
by maintaining and completing a journal over the 3 year period.

The following criteria must be met through revalidation in order to maintain the status of RLIANZA.

1.Individuals must maintain a journal that records evidence of all relevant continuing professional development activities. The would include LIANZA Conference and other LIANZA CPD Training as well as relevent training by other companies relating to the job. To achieve revalidation, these activities must include as a minimum:

a. coverage of all 11 areas of the Body of Knowledge, and
b. activity in 3 of the 4 Domain areas (please note that the 3 domain areas not have to be applied to each of the 11 Body of Knowledge elements), and
c. at least 10 activities per year for the duration of the revalidation period
d. comment on the learning outcomes of each activity undertaken.

Eligibility for Revalidation

Eligibility for Revalidation
All individuals granted the status of RLIANZA (ie Professionally registered) are required to revalidate their registration every 3 years. Registered practitioners will be reminded 3 months prior to the date of renewal of their revalidation, and must forward the necessary documentation within 6 months of this date.

The initial revalidation renewal date for LIANZA Associates is 4 years from the date of their initial registration, thereafter 3 years. The initial revalidation renewal date for LIANZA Fellows is 5 years from the date of initial registration, thereafter 3 years. This is in order to spread the number of revalidations due in 2010.
