MATTERS ARISING: The dinner at the Corn Exchange where Jeannette Birdsall reported on her exchange in Oxford England was very successful. Web 2 training. Library people can take up gaps after school registrations. Kim reported on the East-In SIG link on the LIANZA website. The committee list needs updating. His blog is also current.
It will not be possible to have Glen Walker to visit in November this year as it clashes with Conference.

CORRRESPONDENCE: Request from the Conference Committee to sponsor an event or speaker. Declined as we do not have enough money.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Balance is $1278.33 as at 30th September. LIANZA have not passed on our payment for LIANZA member for 2008. When they do we will know who is a SIG member paid via LIANZA.

Jeannie will send everyone an e-mail when the minutes have been completed to look on the East-In SIG page on the LIANZA website, and also remind them to check the Blog.

GENERAL BUSINESS: Christmas function. This could include reports from conference. Karen will give a report. We will try for St. George’s Estate Early December (not 6th) End of November e.g. 29th or 13th December. The latter being the first choice. Jeannie to contact the Restaurant.
Diana Cram is still running her Web 2 course on November 5th and will get back to us regarding the cost. [Yes it is $90] We will use the IT EXPO money to pay for the IT room hire at EIT.
Professional Registration . The Ikaroa Regional Council reported on options for training, and why we should support LIANZA. Heather Lamont (Ikaroa RC) can come next year to talk about PD for the coming year. Plus someone from the Open Polytechnic. End of January or Early February would be good. As this would be an advantage to school library staff intending to enroll with the Open Polytechnic.
Hastings Central Library could host this meeting, but not on an evening when the library is open to the public. 5.30 – 7.30 A tea meeting with food and wine. Ann Parker will research the finger food providers. Sally will contact the Open Polytechnic and Heather Lamont regarding dates.
Ann Parker reported that we need another signatory for the cheque account. Sally Muir will do this.
Another session for Library assistants would be appreciated. May, would be a suitable time. There could be a focus on the backroom work.
A Midwinter event could be at the newly refurbished Taradale Library if it is ready. Ann Parker will talk to the Scholars Restaurant regarding when they open for bookings.
We will invite Glen Walker in July next year. Jeannie to contact him.
The AGM in August will be held to coincide with the Random House Road Show.
Jenny Cutting asked about Professional Development. Could we have something ‘meaty’
Terry Riley from 3M offered to come down in November this year to talk to library managers about a proposition to have instead of a stand at Conference a tour of the regions with a world class speaker. The speaker would come in March 2009. We could charge for this event as we would be responsible for accommodation costs. The meeting closed at 6.55pm.

Registration after the Transistion Phase

Registration (After Transistion Phase)
To qualify for registration, library and information professionals must:
• show theoretical understanding of the body of professional knowledge at graduate level
• practically apply the body of professional knowledge in a library or information management
environment.
Registration recognises individuals who are committed to achieving and maintaining a professional standard of practice.
Registration is an international standard of quality assurance that will lead to reciprocal recognition in the global job market. Individuals will be able to use the letters RLIANZA (Registered member of the library and information profession) to market themselves to prospective employers. LIANZA will market the benefits to New Zealand employers of recruiting registered library and information professionals.
Will also involve a period of mentoring.

Why Professional Registration?

Over the next few weeks I will give you a chance to have a closer look at Professional registration and for you to see why it will be of benefit to you, whether you have a Library qualification or not. After 30 June 2009 it will be a lot harder for existing Librarians without a qualification to get Professional Registration.
Professional Registration is an assurance for future employers, both in New Zealand and overseas, that a registered member meets professional standards of competency in the body of professional knowledge and ethics required for professional library and information work.
It is also a way of international benchmarking and recognition of professional library qualifications for New Zealanders wishing to work overseas.

It also gives credibility to Librarians & Library & Information Professionals.

Why Professional Registration?
Formal recognition of qualifications and skills.
Increases overseas work opportunities .
Increases professional status.
Revalidation requirements fit with existing training and development initiatives,

Who is eligible?
Transition Period - Foundation Members
Foundation membership: A one-off opportunity
All current library and information professionals are ‘grandparented’ until 30 June 2009. Grandparenting means that current library and information professionals may apply between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2009 for full professional registration as Foundation members.
These transition arrangements provide a one-off opportunity for members of the profession, whether or not they hold a qualification, to meet the criteria for professional registration.

Continuing Education - Team Building & More...

Team building is an important part of a sucessful Library. This stite provides several great articles for team building staff motivation and much more! All free.
http://www.teambuildinginc.com/ei_news.htm

The story of the gees is one of my favourite...

Teambuilding Lessons We Can Learn from Geese
Fact #1 – As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following. By flying in a "V"
formation, the whole flock adds 71 percent greater flying range than if one bird flew alone.
Lesson Learned – People who share a common direction and sense of community can get
where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the strength of one
another.
Fact #2 – Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and
resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage
of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.
Lesson Learned – If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with
those who are ahead of where we want to go and be willing to accept their help as
well as give ours to others.
Fact #3 – When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.
Lesson Learned – It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership.
Fact #4 – The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Lesson Learned – We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging, and not
something else.
Fact #5 – When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is able to fly again, or dies. Then they launch out on their own, with another formation, or they catch up with their flock.
Lesson Learned – If we have as much sense as geese do, we too, will stand by each other in
difficult times as well as when we are strong.

Source Unknown (http://www.teambuildinginc.com/article_geese.htm)
Who are you? (Check all that apply. Then * the one that is most descriptive)
____ A lead goose ____ A backup goose ____ A honker from behind
____ Helper goose ____ Goose in need ____ Goose nurse
Considering your personality and experiences as a group member, which lesson best reflects your current role in the group? Have you learned all these lessons? In what ways could you
take on other roles?
Based on your experiences working with this team, which lesson is most important for the success of the group? Which lessons do the team need to learn?

NZ Book Month

NZ Book Month is a non-profit initiative that has the whole book industry behind it, from writers and publishers to bookshops and libraries. Quite simply, the idea is to get more of us reading New Zealand books.
1st September to the 30th september, and an action packed month it is!
We are proud to be a nation of readers. On a global scale, Kiwis are highly literate and recent surveys show that many of us wouldn’t think about relaxing without a good book. But we want more of those books to be ones that have been written by New Zealand writers. We want to celebrate and showcase the brilliant writing talent we have, to support new and upcoming writers in our country, to tap into the pride we feel in our literary landscape and show you that whatever your taste, there’s a fantastic New Zealand book for you. NZ Book Month is an annual event, which will grow over time to be a nation-wide festival involving everyone from local communities to the Prime Minister

Janette Birdsall - Talk on Her Library exchange at Oxford

Janette Birdsall returned at the end of April to Waipukurau Library from her 8 month exchange trip to Oxford, England.
Whilst there, Janette was Team Librarian at Oxford Central Library. In return, Waipukurau Library hosted Oxford Librarian, Isabelle Kleinknecht.
During Janette’s eight months at Oxford Central she took advantage of many professional networking opportunities presented to her, including:
Attending County Book Selection panels
Book selection at Holton
Assisting with an author visit
Working on a Mobile Library
Working at a branch Library

Janette sought out opportunities to present Library displays and observe work colleagues in their specialist areas.
She attended the ‘ONE TEAM’ Conference and Oxfordshire County Induction and found these to be very stimulating, focused, thought provoking events.
Janette’s biggest challenge as part of her position at Oxford Central was the responsibility for a Foreign Fiction Collection, a new concept for her. She feels this challenge would have been more enjoyable if she had spoken another language….another goal, Janette?
As a winning participant of the ‘One Team’ Conference, Janette had the opportunity of planting two Oak trees at Strathfield Brake, a lining reminder of her time spent in Oxfordshire County.
There was some time for travel too.

Janette, was surprised by ease of travel to Europe, took advantage of this. She enjoyed short trips, sometimes with her flat mates, to places she only dreamed of visiting.
She could not get over how old the building were in Europe. Her favourite place was Prague where she would love to spend more time.
In Janette’s words, “The high point of my exchange was the blending in with a hugely diverse culture.”
