Web 2.0 Course with LIANZA

Web 2.0 to Library 2.0 - A Beginner's Guide
LIANZA are running Web 2.0 courses in our area soon...
This course will be presented in Napier, Gisborne, Invercargill, and Wanganui

Event Leaders: Paul Reynolds & Paul Sutherland. The Pauls will run most of these courses together except for Invercargill which will be run by Paul Sutherland and Wanganui which will be run by Paul Reynolds.
This is a one day learning event for library staff which focuses on the frameworks and tools of the participatory web - the Web 2.0 environment. Participants will be offered some thoughts and ideas and will be encouraged to explore and use some the tools which Web 2.0 offers and to look at the possibilities for their own Library 2.0. The event is practically based and will be constructed to ensure that participants are engaged and have fun.
Who should attend?
The day is aimed at people who have reasonable IT user skills i.e. they are familiar with the Internet, email and use of applications such as word processing. It is not designed for IT experts or those fluent in the use of Web 2.0 tools
Cost
The cost of attendance at the event covers lunch. Travel costs etc are the responsibility of participants or their employers.

Participants are expected to use some of the tools they have been exposed to and to contribute to an ongoing forum. These tasks will not be onerous.

have identified potential uses of web 2.0 tools for their employing institutions

Revalidation Continued: Four Domains of professional Practice

The Four Domains of professional practice
These domains represent the four areas within which continuing professional development activities can be applied. Activities should be conducted in at least three of the following four domains over the course of the three year period.
a) Currency of Professional Knowledge
Activities which help keep one’s professional knowledge and skills current and up to date, including identification of personal learning needs and methods used to address these needs, and effective acquisition of new knowledge to enhance practice. These activities might include for example attending courses, study, and reading.
b) Professional Practice and Responsibility
These are activities related to on the job practice, application and development of professional skills, including increased competence in a range of professional and management skills developed through professional practice. Examples might include: reports, research to develop and improve services, new initiatives, promotion to more senior roles, and service delivery examples.
c) Communication and Professional relationships
This domain relates to communication of knowledge and expertise, and the establishment of professional relationships and networks, including communicating effectively with others, sharing expertise, and utilising strong and effective relationships to enhance services. Specific examples might include delivering conference papers, publication, establishing networks, contribution to listserve discussions, and other sharing of knowledge.
d) Professional Leadership
All librarians or information professionals can display leadership in some aspects of their work. The context in which leadership can be displayed will vary according to the position. A librarian or information professional develops leadership skills to high levels and is respected for his or her expertise and innovation. Examples include leading and supporting other librarians and information professionals, mentoring, encouraging others to participate in relevant professional development activities or to enhance their individual skills, advocacy, contributing to improved professional practice, and taking initiative.

Revalidation Journal

Keeping the Journal
A template for the journal is available on the LIANZA website. The journal can be downloaded to your own computer files and maintained on-line as an excel file. There is a separate worksheet for each of the 11 Body of Knowledge elements.
Alternatively the journal can be printed from the LIANZA website and maintained in hardcopy format.
Embedded links in the spreadsheet provide online explanations of the different categories.
An example of a completed journal has been created on the LIANZA website to provide guidance for applicants and is explained here.

Publishme Seminar & Book Launch

Publishme.co.nz is holding free seminars at Havelock Northl Library on September 15th at 6pm and Tuesday 16th at 12noon It is also holding 2 seminars at Hastings Central Library Tuesday 16th at 6pm and Wednesday 17th at 12noon. Kate Duignan – Swallow Kate lives in Wellington where she is currently teaching the fiction class of the Masters in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University. She was the 2004 recipient of the Robert Burns Fellowship at Otago University. She has published one novel, Breakwater (Victoria University Press, 2001), as well as short fiction and poetry in various journals.David Geary – Gary Manawatu (1964–2008: Death of a Fence-Post-ModernistDavid is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, actor, poet, teacher, batsman-wicketkeeper, his fiction has been published in Sport and the New Zealand Listener. NZ Book Month

NZ Book Month is a non-profit initiative that has the whole book industry behind it, from writers and publishers to bookshops and libraries. Quite simply, the idea is to get more of us reading New Zealand books.

1st September to the 30th september, and an action packed month it is!
We are proud to be a nation of readers. On a global scale, Kiwis are highly literate and recent surveys show that many of us wouldn’t think about relaxing without a good book. But we want more of those books to be ones that have been written by New Zealand writers. We want to celebrate and showcase the brilliant writing talent we have, to support new and upcoming writers in our country, to tap into the pride we feel in our literary landscape and show you that whatever your taste, there’s a fantastic New Zealand book for you. NZ Book Month is an annual event, which will grow over time to be a nation-wide festival involving everyone from local communities to the Prime Minister

Hachette Livre Road Show

Hachette Livre Road Show was a great sucess attended by over 60 people with a great
presentation of books coming out in Oct - Dec. Watch out for some great reads. All
attendees received a Hachette Livre cloth bag with 4 or 5 books and a complete list of the up and coming christmas releases.

The Proposed Registration Schemeand Transition Arrangements, originally drafted in August 2006, havebeen revised and are now called Outline of Registration Scheme and Transition Arrangements respectively. Available now are the Revalidation Guidelines along with the templatefor the Revalidation Journal which you can print off or download to your desk top ready to start filling in. Take a look at the example of a Revalidation Journal which is intended to show how day-to-day activitiesas well as formal professional development activities can contribute tokeeping the various areas of the body of knowledge up to date. WELCOME TO LIBRARY WEEK 2008
Library Week, 18-24 August is a week long celebration of libraries and librarianship in New Zealand taking place in libraries all across the country.
Library Week has been going for over 35 years and is a chance to learn more about the many services libraries offer and to celebrate the important role they play in your community.
This year the Library Week theme is 'What's Your Story?' and you can tell us your stories via the activities and competitions for all ages on this website.
Get involved in Library Week by telling us what you do at the library, by writing a paragraph for the interactive book, by working on a Living Heritage website or by becoming a "book" or "reader" in the Living Library project.

Random Road Roadshow

A great evening was enjoyed by all at the Random Roadshow. Great to catch up with colleagues and business acquaintances etc over some drinks and nibbles. Great show, great food and great books!

Janette Birdsall - Talk on Her Library exchange at Oxford

Janette Birdsall returned at the end of April to Waipukurau Library from her 8 month exchange trip to Oxford, England.
Whilst there, Janette was Team Librarian at Oxford Central Library. In return, Waipukurau Library hosted Oxford Librarian, Isabelle Kleinknecht.
During Janette’s eight months at Oxford Central she took advantage of many professional networking opportunities presented to her, including:
Attending County Book Selection panels
Book selection at Holton
Assisting with an author visit
Working on a Mobile Library
Working at a branch Library

Janette sought out opportunities to present Library displays and observe work colleagues in their specialist areas.
She attended the ‘ONE TEAM’ Conference and Oxfordshire County Induction and found these to be very stimulating, focused, thought provoking events.
Janette’s biggest challenge as part of her position at Oxford Central was the responsibility for a Foreign Fiction Collection, a new concept for her. She feels this challenge would have been more enjoyable if she had spoken another language….another goal, Janette?
As a winning participant of the ‘One Team’ Conference, Janette had the opportunity of planting two Oak trees at Strathfield Brake, a lining reminder of her time spent in Oxfordshire County.
There was some time for travel too.

Janette, was surprised by ease of travel to Europe, took advantage of this. She enjoyed short trips, sometimes with her flat mates, to places she only dreamed of visiting.
She could not get over how old the building were in Europe. Her favourite place was Prague where she would love to spend more time.
In Janette’s words, “The high point of my exchange was the blending in with a hugely diverse culture.”

Get rid of your winter ills and chills by joining East-IN SIG members for a mid winter dinner with a great guest speaker –Waipukurau Library Manager, Janette Birdsall, recently returned from the UK where she accepted an 8 month librarian exchange to Oxford Central Library. This exchange provided Janette with a new professional experience where she gained skills and knowledge while able to enjoy the personal enrichment that comes from contact with another culture. Come along and hear about Janette’s experiences on the other side of the library world.

"New Thinking on LIANZA" Meeting

"New Thinking on LIANZA" - meetings
Monday 19th November 2007 5.30pm @ Hastings Central Library
LIANZA Councillors are seeking feedback from their regions (and other groups of members) about the future structure of the organisation.
The SIGs/Regions/Council meeting prior to Conference 2007 discussed this at some length, and it was decided to run meetings around the country to discuss the same issues.

Questions for consideration:
• What works well currently?
• What would you like to see changed? In what way?
• What sort of organisation would you like LIANZA to be in the future?

National Digital Forum

What is the National Digital Forum?
The National Digital Forum (NDF) is a coalition of organisations across New Zealand Aotearoa with an interest in digital resources. These organisations include museums, archives, art galleries, libraries and government departments.

The NDF is identifying opportunities for organisations to collaborate, co-operate and share information with each other. The objective of the NDF is to facilitate a national approach to building collections of digital cultural heritage resources. A national cross-sectoral approach will help organisations to:
avoid duplicating effort
share information and develop expertise in the regions and nationally
negotiate funding and apply for grants, by providing a strong national platform
